Treatment. The long-term goals are to stop the progression of the disease and maintain the implant site. Depending on the etiology of the problem, a specific treatment is selected. The prevalence of peri-implant mucositis ranged between 0 and 7,14% of patients (5,06% of implants) while the prevalence of peri-implantitis varied from 0 to 4,55% of patients (3,81% of implants). The peri-implant mucositis has developed into peri-implantitis. If the plaque is not removed it continues to grow in the sulcus, where it is impossible to reach with a toothbrush or interdental brush. The plaque hardens into tartar which has a rough surface that attracts more plaque. Peri-implantitis is considered to be an extension of peri-implant mucositis. Peri-implantitis causes the deterioration of the bone that supports the implant.
Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis: incidence, etiology, diagnosis and of persistent signs/symptoms such as pain, infection, neuropathies, parathesias,
The scientific evidence for peri‐implant health, peri‐implant mucositis and peri‐implantitis has been summarized in other manuscripts in this volume. 4-6 The case definitions proposed in this paper are intended to apply to situations in which there are reasons to believe that the presence of biofilm on implant surfaces is the main etiological factor associated with the development of Peri-implantitis, the destructive inflammatory process affecting both soft and hard tissue surrounding a dental implant, is more severe and leads to bone loss 1.

Peri-implantitis, similar to periodontitis, results in inflammation around the soft tissue as well as progressive bone loss. Without evidence of bone loss, the diagnosis is restricted to peri-mucositis (see comparison between peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis below for more information). Other reported features include pain and gingival hyperplasia. Pain is thought to be a rare symptom and is usually linked to an acute infection. Renvert, S. et al. Depending on the etiology of the problem, a specific treatment is selected. Appropriate management of peri-implantitis often requires referral to a periodontist. Etiology: Bacterial Infection Peri implantitis (like gum disease) progresses in stages. In the early peri implantitis stages, a person may experience swollen, tender gums and gum sensitivity. As the stages progress, the gums start to bleed, the dental implant will loosen up, and the jaw becomes tender and increasingly sensitive.
